HOUSE DISTRICT 6 RESULTS
In the contest for the largest legislative district in the House, District 6, Democratic incumbent Woodie Salmon appears to have won a second term, by a slim margin. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Salmon has 120 votes more than his opponent, Republican Carl Morgan. In terms of percentage, Salmon got 51-point-3 percent, while Morgan got 48-point-5 percent. Morgan had a substantial advantage over Salmon in the earlier stages of vote counting, leading by as much as 25 percentage points. But as tallies came in from more remote parts of the District, such as Salmon’s home region around Fort Yukon, the balance tipped to Salmon’s favor. Salmon came to office in 2004 in similar fashion, when he emerged as the winner only in the final stages of tallying the votes. Villages along the Yukon, Koyukuk, and Kuskokwim Rivers came out strongly in favor of Salmon, while road system communities on the east side of the district went to Morgan. Salmon’s campaign drew attention to his work ethic and dedication to traveling across the enormous district as much as possible. He also tied Morgan to Republican efforts to eliminate the longevity bonus and municipal revenue sharing. Voter turnout in the district was about 46 percent. The highest level of turnout was seen in the village of Huslia, where 65 percent of registered voters cast a ballot on Tuesday.
