The cost of preparing for and entering in the Iditarod is often a hurdle that rookie mushers cannot overcome. Rookies have to compile a long list of sponsors, or save money for years in advance to cover the costs of training, supplies, transportation, and entry fees. But the trail to next year’s Iditarod just got much smoother for Galena’s Jon Korta, the most recent winner of the Seppala Heritage Grant. The 10 thousand dollar grant is named after Leonard Seppala, one of the top Alaska mushers of the 20th century and part of the 1925 Serum Run to Nome. As Tim Bodony from KIYU in Galena reports, Korta wont have as much to worry about as he prepares for his first Iditarod.
