Galena Nuclear
Toshiba and
its American subsidiary Westinghouse held a meeting with the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission on October 23, 2007, to discuss the
design and potential licensing process for the 4s reactor. The
first commercial model of the 4s could be located in Galena. The NRC's summary of the meeting is available
here.
The next pre-application meeting, focusing on the safety analysis
that the NRC will perform, is scheduled for May 21, 2008.

Follow
this link to a page containing the seven "white papers" on the
Galena nuclear power proposal. These are preliminary studies
touching on major issues that would come up in a formal review
process with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Toshiba and its partners approached Galena in 2003 about hosting
the first commercial model of its 4-S power plant, which the
company refers to as a "nuclear battery."
Preliminary meetings and information exchanges have taken place,
but the formal application has not begun.
The return of the Galena Agriculture Fair

After a 4 year hiatus, Galena residents revived the annual harvest
festival in 2007. The fun-filled day included vegetable judging,
canoe races, kids' games, and even an old car and truck rally.

The Ptarmigan
Hall slide show

Originally used as barracks for the NCOs stationed at the Galena
Air Force Base, Ptarmigan Hall is the largest and one of the
newest structures on the base.
The Galena City School District has taken over the building, which
houses boarding school students and staff.

Galena Air Base
Comprehensive Reuse Plan site has information and primary

Force facilities in Galena.

draft version of the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the
disposal of Air Force property at the Galena Airport (formerly
known as the Galena Forward Operating Location).

KIYU Galena is a 12.5
kilowatt listener-supported public radio station, broadcasting on
910 AM to the Middle Yukon and Lower Koyukuk region of the
Interior of Alaska. Villages served by KIYU include Ruby, Galena,
Koyukuk, Nulato, Huslia, Kaltag, and Hughes. Other villages that
hear KIYU programming through their local stations include Holy
Cross, Anvik, Grayling, Shageluk, McGrath, and Fort Yukon.
KIYU is a member of Community Radio of
Alaska, along with KSKO McGrath, KZPA Fort Yukon, KTNA Talkeetna,
KHNS Haines, and KUAC Fairbanks.
